The Ritual (2017) is a British horror film directed by David Bruckner, based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Adam Nevill. This chilling and atmospheric tale blends psychological horror with Norse mythology, exploring themes of grief, friendship, and survival.

The story follows four college friendsโ€”Luke, Phil, Hutch, and Domโ€”who reunite to honor their late friend Rob, who was tragically killed during a robbery that Luke survived. To pay tribute to Robโ€™s memory, they embark on a hiking trip through the remote forests of northern Sweden, a destination Rob had once suggested.

As the group ventures deeper into the wilderness, tensions arise. Luke, grappling with guilt over Rob’s death, feels ostracized, while the others struggle with their own personal demons. When Dom injures his leg, the group decides to take a shortcut through the forestโ€”a decision that proves disastrous.

The group realizes they are being stalked by an ancient, malevolent presence. As they try to escape, they are picked off one by one, and it becomes clear that the forest is the domain of a monstrous entityโ€”a creature rooted in Norse mythology known as a Jรถtunn, a child of Loki. The Jรถtunn demands worship and offers eternal life to those who submit, but punishes and kills those who refuse.

In the climactic moments, Luke must confront both the physical threat of the Jรถtunn and his lingering guilt over Robโ€™s death. His decision to fight back rather than submit is both an act of defiance and catharsis, and he ultimately escapes the forestโ€”though not unscathed by the horrors he has endured.
