Superman Returns begins with Superman’s return to Earth after a five-year absence. He had left to search for the remains of his home planet, Krypton, but upon his return, he finds that the world has moved on without him. Lois Lane, now engaged and with a child, has written an article titled “Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman,” which reflects the general sentiment of society in his absence.
Superman tries to reinsert himself into the lives of the people he once protected, but his return is met with mixed emotions. He reconnects with Lois, who is still emotionally tied to him despite her new life. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor, Superman’s longtime foe, is released from prison and hatches a diabolical plan involving a new device that could destroy much of Earth’s landmass.
Luthorโs plan involves using Kryptonian technology to create a massive artificial continent, which he intends to use as a source of power, threatening the stability of the entire planet. Superman confronts Luthor and attempts to stop the destruction of Earth, but he is put to the test as he faces physical and emotional challenges. In the process, he discovers that Lois’ son may be his biological child.
In the final battle, Superman successfully foils Luthorโs plan and saves the world, but not without sacrificing himself in the process. He is gravely injured but ultimately recovers. Lois comes to terms with her feelings for Superman, while the world is once again in awe of the hero who protects them. The film ends with Superman flying off into the sky, continuing his mission as Earth’s protector.
This film reintroduces Superman to a new generation, blending action, emotional depth, and themes of responsibility and identity.
