Mortal Kombat 2 will feature an impressive number of fight scenes, according to one of the film’s stars. Despite coming out as movie theaters were slowly reopening following the COVID-19 lockdown, Mortal Kombat was a hit for Warner Bros. after becoming the biggest movie to premiere on the streaming service at the time, beating out films like Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong. A sequel has been ordered and is scheduled for release in 2025, with many of the original cast returning.
Mechad Brooks, who played Jax in Mortal Kombat and will reprise his role in the sequel, spoke to CBR and revealed that the upcoming film will feature 27 fight scenes. He said, โIn this movie, youโre going to see more of Jaxโs personality, more of his sense of humor, more of what he believes in, and some really, really great fight scenes. There are 27 fight scenes in the movie, and we worked really hard to get those right.โ Itโs likely that many of these fight scenes will be paired together, like in the first movie, where multiple characters would have individual one-on-one fights in a single scene. Still, with nearly 30 fight scenes, thatโs still an impressive number that allows for some exciting fights between fighters.
Mortal Kombat 2 will expand on the scope of the first movie. The first movie ended with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) recruiting Mortal Kombat mainstay Johnny Cage to join the heroes in preparing for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament, which the sequel will likely depict. Karl Urban, best known for playing Billy Butcher on The Boys and Leonard โBonesโ McCoy on the Kelvin timeline Star Trek series, has been cast as Johnny Cage. Other notable newcomers to the cast include Tati Gabrielle (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Jade, Adeline Rudolph (Riverdale) as Kitana, and Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as the villain Shao Kahn.
Returning Mortal Kombat 2 actors joining Brooks include recent Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, with Shลgun co-star Tadanobu Asano reprising his role as Raiden. Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lun, Max Huang, and Chin Han will reprise their roles as Cole Young, Sonya Blade, Kano, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Shang Tsung. Joe Taslim will reprise his role as Bi-Han, but his character, Sub-Zero, will be reborn as the popular fan-favorite Noob Saibot, after his death at the hands of Scorpion in the previous film. With such a large roster of characters, fans can expect to see plenty of fights in Mortal Kombat 2 that are in keeping with the spirit of the game, where players can mix and match different fighting combinations between this colorful cast of characters.
