The story begins with Thor imprisoned by Surtur, a fire demon who reveals that Ragnarokโthe prophesied destruction of Asgardโis approaching. Surtur plans to unite his crown with the Eternal Flame, but Thor escapes, defeating him and taking his crown to Asgard. Upon his return, Thor discovers Loki impersonating their father, Odin, and the two brothers set off to find him. With help from Doctor Strange, they locate Odin in Norway, where he explains his impending death will release their long-lost sister, Hela, the Goddess of Death.
Hela, a powerful and ruthless adversary, shatters Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and forces both Thor and Loki into exile on the distant planet Sakaar. Meanwhile, she conquers Asgard, killing the Warriors Three and resurrecting her army of the dead to establish her reign. On Sakaar, Thor is captured and enslaved by the Grandmaster, a colorful tyrant who forces him into gladiatorial combat. Thor reunites with Hulk, who has been living on Sakaar since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Alongside Hulk and Valkyrieโa former Asgardian warrior disillusioned by past battlesโThor devises a plan to escape and save Asgard.
