Water Monster (2019) is a Chinese fantasy action-adventure film directed by the Xiang brothers, Hesheng Xiang and Qiuliang Xiang, known for blending traditional folklore with modern cinematic storytelling. The movie weaves themes of superstition, revenge, courage, and survival against the backdrop of a mysterious and deadly creature.

The story revolves around Shui Sheng (Lincheng Liu), a young man haunted by his past. As a child, he witnessed his fatherโ€™s tragic death at the hands of a fearsome water creature referred to as a water monkey in local folklore. This event left Shui Sheng deeply traumatized and also ignited fear among the villagers, who regard the monster as an omen of death and destruction.

Years later, the once-dormant water monster resurfaces, terrorizing the village and causing multiple deaths, including the family of Shui Shengโ€™s love interest, Xiang Lan (Lilan Zhu). With villagers gripped by fear and superstition, many believe the attacks to be punishment for upsetting the balance of nature or the spirits that govern the water. Shui Sheng, however, refuses to accept this fate and decides to take action. Driven by vengeance, love, and a sense of responsibility, he takes on the challenge of confronting and defeating the monster. Rallying the villagers, Shui Sheng navigates local myths, spiritual beliefs, and the harsh realities of survival to protect his people and bring peace to the village.

The narrative blends suspense, horror, and action as Shui Sheng and his companions uncover the truth behind the water monsterโ€™s existence, battling both the creature and the deeply ingrained superstitions of their society.
