Cold Prey (original title: Fritt Vilt) is a 2006 Norwegian slasher film directed by Roar Uthaug. It is a chilling, atmospheric horror story that revitalizes the slasher genre with its Nordic setting and strong character development. The film blends traditional slasher tropes with a fresh sense of realism and stunning cinematography of the Norwegian wilderness.

The story follows a group of five friendsโ€”Jannicke (Ingrid Bolsรธ Berdal), Eirik (Tomas Alf Larsen), Mikal (Endre Martin Midtstigen), Ingunn (Viktoria Winge), and Morten Tobias (Rolf Kristian Larsen)โ€”who embark on a snowboarding trip in the remote mountains of Norway.

Their adventure takes a grim turn when Morten Tobias breaks his leg, forcing them to seek shelter in an abandoned ski lodge. As night falls, they discover that they are not alone. A hulking, masked killer, who has been living in isolation in the lodge, begins stalking and murdering them one by one.

The friends must fight for their survival in the freezing wilderness, where both the killer and the environment pose deadly threats.

Cold Prey was well-received both in Norway and internationally, praised for its suspenseful direction, believable characters, and atmospheric visuals. While the plot follows familiar slasher conventions, critics noted the film’s effective use of its stark setting and Uthaug’s ability to create tension without relying heavily on gore.

The filmโ€™s success led to two sequels: Cold Prey II (2008) and Cold Prey III (2010), which expand on the original story and the killer’s background.
