Sky High (2005) is a family-friendly superhero comedy film directed by Mike Mitchell. The film takes place in a world where superheroes are a normal part of society and follows the adventures of a teenager attending a high school specifically for the children of superheroes. Combining humor, heart, and action, itโs a unique coming-of-age story with a superhero twist.
Will Stronghold, the son of legendary superhero duo The Commander (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream (Kelly Preston), is about to start his freshman year at Sky High, a flying high school for superhero teens. While his parents are eagerly awaiting the manifestation of his superpowers, Will secretly struggles with the fact that he has not yet developed any abilities.
Upon arrival at Sky High, students are divided into two tracks: “heroes” and “sidekicks” (or “hero support”). Will is placed with the sidekicks, much to his embarrassment. His closest friend, Layla (Danielle Panabaker), an environmentalist with plant-manipulation powers, remains supportive, though she secretly harbors romantic feelings for him.
As the semester progresses, Will unexpectedly develops super strength and is promoted to the hero class, where he befriends Gwen Grayson (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a popular senior. Gwen’s charm distracts Will from his true friends, causing a rift with Layla and the rest of the sidekicks.
However, Gwen is revealed to be the villainous Royal Pain, a disgraced former student who plans to use a device to turn everyone at Sky High into babies, intending to raise and control them as villains. With the help of his sidekick friends, Will overcomes his personal insecurities, reconciles with Layla, and uses both his strength and newfound ability to fly to defeat Royal Pain and save the day.
