The Little Drummer Boy (1968) is a stop-motion animated Christmas special produced by Rankin/Bass. It tells the story of Aaron, a young orphaned boy living in ancient Judea. After his parents are killed by raiders, Aaron is left alone with his donkey, and he becomes a wandering drummer, playing his drum to earn a living. He is bitter and angry, rejecting the idea of kindness and joy.

One day, Aaron encounters a group of travelers, including the Three Wise Men, who are on their way to Bethlehem to visit the newborn Jesus. They invite Aaron to join them on their journey, but he is initially unwilling. However, after a series of events, including helping the group escape a band of thieves and witnessing the beauty of the star that guides them to Bethlehem, Aaron’s heart begins to soften.

When they arrive at the stable where Jesus is born, Aaron is moved by the sight of the baby and his parents, Mary and Joseph. He feels unworthy to give a gift, but when the baby Jesus smiles at him, Aaron is inspired to offer the only gift he has: the music from his drum. He plays a simple but heartfelt song, which brings peace to the scene. Through this act, Aaron experiences a personal transformation, discovering the joy of giving and the power of love and faith.

The film highlights themes of redemption, hope, and the value of the simple gifts we can offer, even in the face of hardship. The iconic song “Little Drummer Boy” accompanies the special, reinforcing its message of love and generosity.
