Synopsis:

Don’t Knock Twice is a supernatural horror film that follows Jess (Katee Sackhoff), a recovering addict who is trying to reconnect with her estranged daughter, Chloe (Lucy Boynton). Chloe, however, becomes entangled in an urban legend about a witchโ€”knocking twice on her door supposedly summons her vengeful spirit. As supernatural events escalate, mother and daughter must confront the terrifying force that haunts them.

Review:

The film has an intriguing premise, drawing from urban legends and folk horror influences. However, while it boasts strong performances and eerie atmosphere, it struggles with a predictable plot and uneven pacing.

Strengths:
  • Katee Sackhoff’s performance: She delivers a solid, emotionally driven performance as a mother seeking redemption.
  • Creepy atmosphere: The film utilizes strong cinematography and lighting to create an unsettling environment.
  • Javier Botet as the witch: Botet, known for his work in horror (Mama, The Conjuring 2), brings an unnerving physicality to the entity.
  • Some effective scares: There are moments of genuine tension and well-crafted jump scares.
Weaknesses:
  • Clichรฉd storytelling: The movie follows familiar horror tropes, making it feel somewhat formulaic.
  • Underdeveloped mythology: While the legend is intriguing, it lacks depth, making it less impactful.
  • Inconsistent pacing: The film moves between slow, moody horror and fast-paced, conventional scares without balance.

Final Verdict:

Don’t Knock Twice is a visually atmospheric horror film with strong performances, but it fails to fully capitalize on its premise. While enjoyable for fans of supernatural horror, it doesnโ€™t break new ground.
