Thirteen Ghosts is a supernatural horror film and a remake of the 1960 classic by William Castle. Directed by Steve Beck, the 2001 version amps up the scares with cutting-edge special effects and a uniquely designed haunted house made almost entirely of glass.
The story follows Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub), a widowed father who inherits a bizarre mansion from his eccentric uncle, Cyrus (F. Murray Abraham). Along with his children (played by Shannon Elizabeth and Alec Roberts) and their nanny (Rah Digga), Arthur soon discovers that the house is a deadly machine powered by the spirits of twelve trapped ghostsโeach with a gruesome backstory. As the house begins to shift and lock down, the family must fight to survive, while a psychic (Matthew Lillard) reveals the dark truth behind the building’s purpose: to open the “Ocularis Infernum” โ the Eye of Hell.
Full of jump scares, grotesque spirits, and an unforgettable set design, Thirteen Ghosts is a cult favorite for fans of early 2000s horror. Each ghostโlike the Jackal or the Juggernautโhas its own mythology, making the film not only terrifying but oddly captivating. It’s chaotic, creepy fun with a haunted house like no other.
