“Masters of the Air” follows the 100th Bomb Group, also known as the “Bloody Hundredth,” a unit in the United States Air Force tasked with carrying out dangerous bombing missions over Nazi Germany during World War II. The show highlights intense aerial combat at 25,000 feet, where pilots face harsh conditions, lack of oxygen, and constant danger. It also delves into the emotional and psychological trauma of these soldiers as they fight to defeat the Nazis, showcasing themes of sacrifice, brotherhood, and survival. Some of the pilots were shot down and captured, while others were wounded or killed, but all suffered severe psychological trauma.
Cast:
Austin Butler (of Elvis fame) plays Major Gale Cleven.
Callum Turner plays Captain John Egan.
Barry Keoghan, Ncuti Gatwa and Anthony Boyle also appear in prominent roles.
Jared Harris plays General Curtis LeMay.
Directors include Cary Joji Fukunaga (director of No Time to Die) and Dee Rees (director of Mudbound), who were responsible for several episodes.
